Just like fashion and the seasons, the world of beauty is incredibly propelling in nature. Remember the moments that broke the internet in 2019? The fish scale hair texture, glassy skin, blue eyelashes, unicorn hair, 3-D printed skincare products… in retrospect, it adds up as one hell of a year.
However, beauty overall has drastically evolved over the years. Today, it’s all for exposing our inner fearlessness, idiosyncratic and ballsy personas. Frankly, we’re doing a far better job today than what we did before. So, on the brink of a new year, we continue to await full disclose of the hot new beauty trends in 2020 that’ll push boundaries throughout the year. While we don’t have a crystal ball to help us predict the future, we do have three marvels that help us get there. Makeup Artist Ojas Rajani, Aesthetician, and Dermatologist Dr. Jaishree Sharad, and Makeup Artist Swati Verma help shed light on the beauty forecast for 2020.
Keep scrolling to learn the rising beauty trends that are destined to dominate your beauty goals:
BACK TO THE BASICS WITH FLIRTATIOUS LASHES
Makeup Artist: Ojas Rajani
“The eyeliner trend is completely passé and already on its way out. The romantic doe-eyed look takes center stage. To achieve that upcoming beauty trend in 2020, snagging natural-looking extensions for its flirty vibe will be a smart move. Expect a minimal show of bright lips this year. It’s going to be nude lips with a matte base to add a subtle touch of color without going OTT. As for the face, a high definition contoured, sculpted look for the chiseled cheekbones effect will set the bar high. The use of blush, highlighter, and illuminator is very minimal; instead, it’s more like an au natural Cinderella.”

GO GREEN WITH BAKUCHIOL FOR SKIN
Aesthetician and Dermatologist: Dr. Jaishree Sharad
Already on the green lane? Cheers, ’cause natural products will take full flight this year. “Customers today are making conscious decisions about the ingredients used in products. This has led to a surge in natural beauty,” says Dr Jaishree. This also reinforces the shift toward bakuchiol-infused products as a substitute to retinoids. The plant-derived ingredient is proven to be as effective as it’s lab-based counterpart retinol—it boosts collagen production, increases skin elasticity, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and also fights photoaging of skin with no side-effects and hence, makes a gentler (and safer) alternative for conscious beauty lovers.

HIGH-TECH BEAUTY = SUSTAINABILITY
Makeup Artist: Swati Verma
It’s not only about I, Me and Myself, but also about the well-being of the environment we live in. “Environmentally-friendly beauty is on the radar this year. Many companies are reducing their plastic packaging or creating products that can be used with minimal water requirement,” points Ms. Swati. Case in point: 100% recyclable packaging by brands like Love, Beauty, and Planet, and Kiehl’s, and the revolutionary micellar technology in products by Aveda to save water (and protect the environment). So, the next time you shop sustainable beauty, take pride knowing that you’re doing the environment justice.

A THROWBACK TO DIANA PALMER’S DREAMY LOCKS
Makeup Artist: Ojas Rajani
“In terms of hair, the theme this year is very romantic and fairytale-like… hair that is styled without too many heat-inducing devices, more like classic Hollywood waves with a bounce on the crown area is here to rule the world. The final look is very textured or sculpted, like Diana Palmer from The Phantom,” informs Ojas. In terms of products, easy-to-do hair with hot rollers, texturizing sea salt spray or rigid head rush hair lacquer for extra sheen, volume and bounce are out to be a sure hit. Time to stalk up?

CONFRONT THE SILENT SKIN AGGRESSOR
Aesthetician and Dermatologist: Dr. Jaishree Sharad
Anti-pollution skincare was the trendiest buzzword last year and is here to stay in 2020. Apart from antioxidants like Vitamin C, ingredients like the good old’ charcoal and the humble green tea will again see a boom in an urban skincare regime. They fight pigmentation, inflammation, dehydration, and dullness, so it’s really a win-win scenario.

REWIND BACK TO THE RETRO DAYS
Makeup Artist: Swati Verma
“Get ready to go back to the ’70s this year. Aside from the retro-inspired beauty, we’re also bringing back its groovy festivals, parties, and all things disco. A good way to try this beauty trend is by flaunting ultra-glitter eyes, natural-looking colored lenses, and brushed brows. They look chic, rather than making you look like a human disco ball. There’s also something effortlessly cool about glossy lips—they’re basic at its best and perfectly compliment the Retro smokey eye look.”

PROBIOTICS, NOW FOR YOUR SKIN
Aesthetician and Dermatologist: Dr. Jaishree Sharad
Over exfoliation? You could be pushing away good bacteria. “An extreme exfoliation could be messing up the natural microbiome of the skin, which is the protective layer of good bacteria that keep your skin healthy overall. To prevent the same, more products are trying to incorporate pre and probiotics in their products like face masks, face washes, face creams and even face serums. This helps soothe inflammation and also maintain the microbiome balance for happy, healthy skin,” explains Dr. Jaishree.

HAIR ACCENTS TAKE OVER
Makeup Artist: Swati Verma
Ms. Swati agrees that hair accessories are going to be the highlight of hairstyles in 2020. “Go bold or go home, it’s the year of hair accessories overload,” she remarks. Crystals, pearls, hair chains… there’s so much to try from summer to spring. As for hairstyles, bouncy ponytails raised up buns, messy fishtails, and beachy waves are a must-try this year. For a simpler yet sophisticated look, Ms. Swati places her bet on slicked-back hair. “It’s quick and delivers a sultry wet look finish,” she says.
